Creating a new education campus for East London

Located near City Airport, Beckton Park DLR and East London University, the Royal Albert Dock development was originally delivered by ABP, with Phase 1 completed in early 2018. This phase comprises 21 office buildings across five plots, delivering 460,000 sq ft of workspace and 140,000 sq ft of retail, public realm and a centralised energy centre.

In March 2023, our client acquired the leasehold interest from the GLA. RENU were appointed shortly after, in September 2023, to lead development strategy and planning for the repurposing of the Bond and Duty buildings into PBSA. We led the planning application for Phase 1, a 628 bed PBSA scheme with ancillary uses and amenity space, securing consent in June 2024. The scheme is designed with sustainability at its core, placing a strong emphasis on reducing embodied carbon through the reuse of existing structure and materials.

Following this, Phase 2 a further 457 bed PBSA proposal was submitted in November 2024 and successfully consented in February 2025, with RENU again providing development management services.

This transformational project will inject new life and energy into Royal Albert Dock, fostering community, activating underused land and serving as a catalyst for wider regeneration, investment and creativity in the area.
